Diverse Communities Outreach Project
(Supported by a WSCC carers grant)
The aim of 4SIGHT’s Diverse Communities Outreach Project is to meet the needs of carers and cared for persons, aged 18 and over from black, Asian and ethnic minority Communities in Crawley who are affected by sight loss.
The project offers carers opportunities to break from caring by either attending activities themselves or the person they care for attending, allowing the carer to have a break.
These breaks may be the form of the following:
Day Trips and Events
During the year a number of day trips are planned which are usually chosen by the carers. In 2012 we are planning trips to Eastbourne, Highdown Gardens, shopping in Southall and a presence at Crawley Mela festival.
Short Breaks
Throughout the year short respite breaks are planned which have included showings of Bollywood movies, coffee mornings and therapies such as head messages and acupressure. In 2011 our curry lunches proved very popular, so we aim to plan more of these in 2012 along with health walks and picnics.

Milan Group
The Milan group is a friendship group for women from ethnic minority backgrounds, who care for others. The group provides a break from caring through a variety of activities. From May It will meet on the third Wednesday of each month between 11am and 1pm. These meetings offer educational speakers and information on local services and support available.
Speakers have ranged from falls prevention, benefits advice to healthy eating. Interactive activities have ranged from accessing computers, music and movement and hand bell ringing. Time is allocated for members to discuss problems and share experiences, but also to relax, socialise and enjoy each other’s company away from the home environment.
Meetings are held in the Bill Buck Meeting room,
First Floor, Crawley Library, Southgate Avenue,
Crawley, RH10 6HG

Home Visits
Where possible when a need for a home visitor has been identified, we will aim to match a carer or cared for person with a visitor. These visits may take the form of a friendship visit accompanying a person on a medical appointment or assisting with some shopping.
We are currently recruiting new volunteers for this service. If you feel you can support someone in your community, even for one hour a week, your help could give a carer a break or much needed friendship.
